It can be really hard to find time to write here, these days, because of all of my other writing gigs. Y’know, the ones that actually pay. Did you know I write for Romper, a fantastic site for Millennial moms, 3 days a week? If you’re thinking to yourself, “Wow, I didn’t know she was a Millennial! But I guess she does look young…” well bless your hearts, but I am NOT, in fact, part of that demographic. I’m Gen X. But don’t tell them, okay?
Anyway, I’m always looking for excuses to come back to my site and write for whomever is still listening, so I decided to resurrect this experimental post from back in October as a way to get me back to posting regularly. It also gives me the chance to highlight a post I wrote elsewhere that week, in case you missed it. And like I said the first time I tried this feature out, it’s not just stuff that I want to highlight, here. People, entertainers, news stories, as well as particularly lovely products that I’ve had a chance to fall in love with, will all get their moment in the spotlight.
And hey! If there’s anything that you want me to look at, or try out, shoot me a line on Twitter, Facebook or email. I’m interested in new stuff, whether it’s ideas, books, kitchen utensils, or whatever. And now, without further ado, here’s this week’s edition of 5 Things Friday:
1. Neil deGrasse Tyson
The husband, quick thinker that he is, snapped up tickets to the first Toronto date of his 2016 tour as soon as it was announced. If you don’t know who he is, first of all, what rock are you living under? Second of all, you might think he’s some kind of entertainer. A comedian, or a singer. Nope, he’s an astrophysicist. But let me tell you, if he had been my high school science teacher, I would also be an astrophysicist by now, instead of just writing about one. He is interesting, funny, articulate, relevant, entertaining and extremely incisive. Everyone needs to see this man speak.
2. ATTITUDE Natural Air Purifier
This thing has pretty much saved my front hall and entry way. See, we have a tiny house with an unfinished basement that has all kinds of scary stuff from our landlords down there. We also have 2 cats, and they need to do their business somewhere. The only place we could come up with that was safe for the cats and out of the kids’ way was in our front hall closet. SO. STINKY. But no choice. So we’ve been suffering all this time, until I got this incredible air purifier by ATTITUDE last week. It literally took less than two hours to completely eliminate the smell of cat litter and cat urine from the front hall. I LOVE IT. And it’s completely natural! Now I just need one next to the Diaper Genie…
3. My Sorel boots
Before this winter, I had never owned real winter boots. I mean, I had Roots hiking boots that I loved and wore through the winter. They were rugged enough to last more than 10 years, including a hike into the Grand Canyon! But they weren’t lined. This year, though? I did it. I sprung for the real deal, lined winter boots good to -32C and oh my god why didn’t I do it sooner? I. Love. Them. Nothing fancy, nothing pretty; just functional and warm.
4. MyChelle Dermaceuticals Sun Shield SPF 28
As you probably know (or maybe you don’t), I am pretty much all about the natural body care products, after spending almost 8 years working as a beauty consultant in an organic grocery store. The hardest thing, by far, is getting the sunscreen right. Ugh. It’s either too greasy or too white or too cakey or filled with ingredients I don’t want to put on my face. EXCEPT FOR THIS. I don’t know how they do it, but the MyChelle Sun Shield actually goes on totally matte and without the slightest hint of white residue. I will be wearing this every single day to drop off/pick up the Fournado from school. You know, so that my Millennial-looking skin stays youthful and dewy.
5. ICYMI: Why I’ve Got A Placenta In My Freezer
Yes, I have a placenta collection, and yes, I wrote about it. This is as funny as it gets, from me. Everyone that read it seemed to get a good laugh from it, so if you missed it the first time around, go check it out on BLUNTmoms now.
