Traveling in health is easier than you think.
So I’ve been talking to everyone, everywhere, about this transformation I’m going through. I’m eating healthier, I’m working out in a way that is making me feel strong and energized. I’m enjoying food, but I’m not a slave to it in any way. It’s been fantastic, and I’ve been living a healthy 80/20 eating rule, so that I can occasionally indulge when I think it’s truly worth it. So naturally, it’s time for a test, right? Enter the possibility of travel.
Last month, my husband and I decided, kind of on a whim, to visit his parents in Florida for a few weeks. Because my job is so mobile (lucky me!) I had no problem going elsewhere to do it, and my son is only 2 and my younger daughter is only in kindergarten, so no big deal for her to miss school for a few weeks. We looked up our reward miles, and sure enough, we had enough for the 4 of us to travel down before March break hit, for next to nothing.
One of the hardest things for anyone who’s trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle is going somewhere different and trying to negotiate new menus, with limited access to your regular array of “good food” and nowhere to cook your own meals. Dave Asprey has talked about this challenge himself, and has even come up with some awesome ways of hacking your Bulletproof coffee, when you don’t have a kettle.
Personally, I didn’t want to risk bringing a bottle of Brain Octane Oil (or BOO, as I like to call it) that might leak all over my suitcase, or even just out of the bottle and into a ziploc baggie. That stuff is liquid gold, and I hate wasting a single drop. So okay, my Bulletproof coffee was going to be off the menu while in Florida, but let’s talk about some pretty delicious alternative ways to get that precious BOO in me: Collagen Protein bars and bites.
These little suckers have saved me, on my trip. One full bar provides 11 grams of collagen protein from grass-fed cows, as well as healthy fats from BOO and XCT oils, not to mention cashew butter and incredible upgraded vanilla. To top it off? Stevia-sweetened, so you won’t experience any kind of sugar crash. You can get them in three flavours: fudge brownie, vanilla shortbread, and lemon cookie. I still can’t decide which flavour is my favourite, but I love being able to choose between them, depending on what I feel like that day.
Last week, I often found myself grabbing one of these bars as a mid-morning snack, and I could feel myself being lifted out of the brain fog I was experiencing. I swear, going from Bulletproof coffee daily to just regular coffee again was a shock to my system, and absolute proof of its amazing effect on my brainpower. Having a Collagen Protein Bite got me through each day, but this week, when we traveled to a resort in Kissimmee in order to visit Disney with the kids, I relied on them for breakfast, before going into the park. Having that solid foundation of protein and fat helped me last well into the afternoon, without facing any hunger or cravings.
(We won’t talk about the late night return to Disney, after the kids were in bed, though. When I ended up getting an ice cream sandwich the size of an actual sandwich. Ooops.)
My trip ends in just a few days. I will be sad to leave the sunshine, ocean, and warmth that my time in Florida has brought me, but I’m looking forward to returning to my Bulletproof routine. And I know what I’ll be bringing along with me in a few months, when I travel again.
